The Month of Dark and Light

3 December 2009 7 Comments

My family hails from above the arctic circle.  My mother has the jet black hair of Laplanders.

In Norway, above the arctic circle, the sun goes down in November, and doesn’t peep back up until sometime in January.  It is a long nighttime journey.

Even here, at the 45th parallel, right between the equator and the north pole, the sky goes dark in the very early evening, and the night is long.

What is Dark?

Is Dark Bad?

What is the purpose of being out of the light?

We’re going to explore darkness and light this month.  We’re going to start with Dark.

I need help here, answering the question, “What is Dark?”

I am getting the feeling that it’s not all bad.

That dark, in and of itself, is not bad at all.

That dark is what it is, and by bumbling around in it (or exploring it or peering into it or what have you), we might find something of value. Something we already have.

I’m being esoteric here. I know.

Tell me, what is dark?

    Dark is rest, dark is not knowing, dark is a time when you have to trust that the light will return and you will eventually know. Dark is hard!

    Dark seems contemplative to me, I like making artwork during the winter months the best because I can withdraw into myself.

    Dark is the absence of light.

    Man lives by striving to navigate his journey through the light. Dark casts a shadow upon our soul which forces Man to look for light within. It is both a time for reflection and self-assertion and a place where our imaginations run free to create illusions of light.

    Dark is a concept that conjurs up uneasiness and uncertainty. Man has always feared the Dark, which is entirely different from being afraid of the dark.

    The Man who never ventures into the light, may be truly lost. Dark forces our center into ourselves, whereas Light draws our center to a realm beyond ourselves.

    I think dark is missing all the distractions of the day.

    If it isn’t dark you won’t spot the light at the end of the tunnel!

    Dark is what nature holds in balance with light.
    Night has day;
    winter turns to summer;
    confusion becomes clarity;
    stillness leads to motion;
    inhalation shifts to exhalation.
    All in time.

    Twilight:
    the place of balance
    when the sky lights with magical colors,
    and we can feel with all our senses
    that we are,
    all is,
    the balance of both light and dark.

    May we remember in our darkest moments that a shift will occur just as surely as our brightest moments fade – only to return in a different form and time. And may we take the steps we can with the power we hold to create our own balance.

    I can’ t help but think about the movie, The Matrix.

    Perhaps Dark and Light are two aspects of the same reality that depend on one another to exist. A peaceful co-existence of Dark and Light would require both balance and disruption in order to cycle.

    Blue pill or red pill?

Words, come easy.
